A herd of cattle on the trail in the Matador Range, Texas. The outer edges of the railroad-opened territory west of the Mississippi may have been securely settled and politically integrated into the U.S., but the interior of the West was still a frontier. Three distinct frontiers emerged after the Civil War. The best known in American mythology is the cattle or ranching frontier.
